Basic and Translational Research Training
The Division of Classical Hematology, in conjunction with the Vascular Medicine Institute, offers a comprehensive environment for developing the next generation of leaders in classical hematology research. Trainees benefit from individualized career development plans that combine rigorous research training, formal coursework, and tailored mentorship. Training opportunities, supported by NIH training grants, emphasize translational research, encouraging fellows to work with multidisciplinary teams that bridge basic science and clinical application, and to gain hands-on experience with advanced laboratory methodologies as well as regulatory and industry perspectives.
Trainees are supported in designing and leading meaningful research projects, developing grant-writing and scientific communication skills, and producing peer-reviewed publications. Structured mentorship, progress evaluations, and career development resources ensure that each participant receives guidance tailored to their goals. Additionally, trainees have the opportunity to be appointed to either the Vascular Medicine Institute’s T32 or the Pittsburgh Center for Training in Kidney, Urology, and Hematology (PCT-KUH) U2C/TL1, which provides access to interdisciplinary training, networking, and professional development.
Together, these experiences create a robust and dynamic training environment that equips graduates for successful careers in academic medicine, research, and industry.
